States of Matter

Did my ice marbles experiment actually work? The short answer is no. All I got was some really pretty colored snow when I popped them.

I put the water-filled balloons outside yesterday afternoon when the temperatures were below freezing. Last night it was in the teens. But the water didn’t freeze at all! Do you know what else happened yesterday? I few inches of snow fell and covered up the balloons. I actually had to dig them out!!!

What effect do you predict the snow had on the balloons?

The snow actually insulated the balloons, so the water didn’t freeze. The snow was insulation, just like the fat and feathers on penguins.

I wonder what will happen if I put one in my freezer — where it has no insulation? I think I’ll try it out with my last balloon. Tune in tomorrow for the results.
