Signed Papers

Many students have not returned their signed papers from this week. Please return them tomorrow.
Thank you!

Our virtual fieldtrip to Columbia

Today, we got out their passports and went on a virtual field with about 100 schools from across the country. We visited Columbia where we learned about the ecosystems and wildlife, as well as how furry, sunflower-like plants and moss capture the mist and rain, storing and filtering water for the city residents downstream. We also went on a scavenger hunt, looking for flora and animals.

More work on our greenhouses...

Our seed has germinated!

Last week we planted a seed from the pine trees by the football field. It only took about a week to start germinating and look at the difference between yesterday at 2:45am and this morning at 8am.

Our spring STREAM Project

We wrapped up designing our green houses, and have begun building. We are making sure that our seeds will have plenty of sunlight, air, water, and room to grow. We will also be collecting data on when the different seeds begin to germinate and how tall they get.

I LOVE brain-based research

I could research all day, which is why I love being a student. I’m always learning new ways to help you LEARN! Guess what I just read? The color green helps improve concentration.

So, I’m going to give everyone a green pencil to use during testing and you can wear your class t-shirt, which happens to be green. If you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed, stop, look at your pencil, and take a deep breath. Think about the bright green leaves bursting from the deciduous trees. Think about a thick, woody forest filled with coniferous trees. Close your eyes and imagine your lying in thick green grass looking up at cumulus clouds.

You probably know this already, just by taking a look at a forest or a field. Low wavelength colors promote restfulness and calm, and they improve efficiency and focus.

So that’s why green is an excellent color for improving concentration. Apart from being one of the easiest colors on the eyes, it reminds us of nature. That’s why TV stars stay in the ‘green room’. It’s a relaxing space.

Green is a good color for keeping long-term concentration and clarity, making it a good choice for an office – as opposed to red, which is seen as stimulating and exciting. Maybe it helps in the short term, but stimulation has to tail off sometimes.
Interestingly enough, there’s some real scientific evidence for this. Some studies have shown that people who work in green offices have higher rates of job satisfaction, and consumers have been shown to spend more time shopping in stores that are painted green [1].

Sweet Dreams

Get plenty of rest. A rested brain is a ready brain!!!!

Pencils

Make sure you have plenty of sharpened #2 pencils and an eraser (if needed).

Boost your concentration with ... ice cream??

Does ice cream make you smarter (comparative adjective)?

A university in Japan conducted research on whether or not ice cream for breakfast improves brain
function.  We're not sure if it's true -- the glucose (sugar) may just give you a mental boost,
positive thoughts, or added energy. Regardless, it's worth a try, so have ice cream for breakfast!

Research also shows that chewing gums helps wake up your brain. It increases your heart rate, blood
pressure, and cerebral (brain) blood flow.

Peppermint and Rosemary also can have a positive effect on your memory.

I will have bubble gum for the class to chew, but it's not sugar free. If you would like to bring sugar-free
gum,  you may. You may also bring peppermint disks, but no other candy.
