Subjects and Predicates


The subject is the part of the sentence that tells whom or what the sentence is about.
·       My brother Bill rode his purple bike.
o   Who rode the bike? Bill
o   Bill is the subject of the sentence.

·       The large waves crashed to the short during the storm.
o   What crashed?  The waves.
o   Waves are the subject of the sentence.

The predicate is  the part of the sentence that tells what the subject of the sentence does.
·       My brother Bill rode his purple bike.
o   What did Bill do?   He rode his bike.
o   Rode is the verb (predicate)

Complete Subject and Complete Predicate
All the words in the subject are called the complete subject.
·       My brother Bill rode his purple bike.
·       The complete subject:   My brother Bill
All the words in the predicate are called the complete predicate.
·       My brother Bill rode his purple bike.
·       The complete predicate:   rode his purple bike
