Subjects and Predicates



Subjects and Predicates

Subject – the part of the sentence that tells whom or what the sentence is about.
·         My brother Bill rode his purple bike.
·         Who rode the bike? Bill
·         Bill is the subject of the sentence.

·         The large waves crashed to the short during the storm.
·         What crashed?  The waves.
·         Waves are the subject of the sentence.

Predicate – the part of the sentence that tells what the subject of the sentence does.
·         My brother Bill rode his purple bike.
·         What did Bill do?   He rode his bike.
·         Rode is the verb (predicate)

Complete Subject and Complete Predicate

All the words in the subject are called the complete subject.
·         My brother Bill rode his purple bike.
·         The complete subject:   My brother Bill 

All the words in the predicate are called the complete predicate.
·         My brother Bill rode his purple bike.
·         The complete predicate:   rode his purple bike
