Today we celebrated National Inventor's Day (Feb. 11). We learned about three inventors. George Alcorn, who invented the x-ray spectrometer, which analyzes x-ray light patterns and has been used to search for new planets. Did you know that Emmett Chappelle, inventor of bioluminesence techniques, studied fireflies to see how they glow? He used his discoveries to make tools to investigate the soil on Mars. Jim West is in the inventor of the electret microphone, which is used in everyday items, such as cell phones, computers, medical devices, and video game headsets. The students used a small circuit board and recorder to record their singing "Let the Children Come."
Each student was challenged to think of a new invention that incorporates one of these invention. They will write about their invention and design a prototype.
We also made robot crickets using solar panels -- another invention that uses the power of the sun!
Thank you to the National Inventor's Hall of Fame and Camp Invention for providing the materials for our exploration, which included a rocket, photoluminescent paper, UV light, and a recording device.
