Will the napkin stay dry?

Second graders are learning about states of matter and that matter occupies space. Today, I demonstrated how two types of matter can’t occupy the same space by conducting an experiment with a cup, bowl of water, and a napkin.

They are also learning about scientific inquiry, starting with asking a guiding question and forming a hypothesis.

I asked the students if they thought the napkin would stay dry if it was put in a cup and dunked in water, how they could dunk it so that it does stay dry, and what keeps it dry. We had lots of great critical thinking going on as each formed a hypothesis.

We also discussed that it’s ok for an experiment to fail. You just keep trying.

All three experiments failed, so try again. You just haven’t figured it out YET! REMEMBER: two types of mass can't occupy the same space.

HINTS: Think about HOW you dunk the cup. Think about the direction in which you dunk. Think about what would happen if you go in at an angle. Is it about speed?)

Fourth graders are continuing to use the Scientific Method to discover what’s in their mystery box. They weighed items using a triple balance scale.

Chess Club

Our new Chess Club has students in 4th - 8th grade. We have several students who are new to chess, so after a mini lesson on moves, they jumped right in to play teaching games with some of the other more experienced students.

8th grade STREAM day!

Eighth graders participated in STREAM day where they learned about the periodic table of elements in a cross-curricular lesson, culminating in a final project that will be presented at STREAM Night on March 21^st. Students will “sell” their elements that night, so be sure to stop by and check out their work.

Students conducted research on their chosen element, and then created an advertisement, which included an original marketing slogan to appeal to their target audience. They also created a profit goal with which to calculate profit after the sale. In Religion, the students discussed the social aspects of some of the elements, and then compared and contrasted how their elements were used in the bible vs today’s uses.  And finally in Social Studies, they determined where there elements originated and the effects of the element from a global perspective.

The first Friday in March is observed as World Day of Prayer.

Psalm 85

1 You, Lord, showed favor to your land;
    you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
