Our field trip to the Memphis Zoo

It was humid and wet, but hopefully everyone learned something new today. Be sure to check out the post with my tiger keeper notes and video.

Sanctuary Tiger Habitat



Driving Question: How can I design a sanctuary habitat that is safe and appropriate for a tiger? 

Objectives:
Students will be able to:
1) Identify and describe food, water, and shelter as three important parts of habitat
2) Describe the importance of good habitat for the tiger;

Part I: RESEARCH  - team work
1.      Choose an ecosystem: Rainforest, grassland, tundra.
2.      Find your tiger: Determine which type of tiger lives in that habitat within the ecosystem.
3.      Find details about the habitat, including climate, plant life, and location.
4.      Research information about your tiger and how it lives in this habitat (diet, communication, community, and survival/hunting skills).
5.      Resources: Write down your resources, including the speaker at The Memphis Zoo (Farshid) and Mr. Ryan McDaniels, Senior Engineer from A2H.  

Part II:  REPORT –  some independent work
Use your research to write a two paragraph report about the habitat and tiger, including a bibliography.
·         The research will be worked on at school with your group.
·         The final draft written at home.

Part III: HABITAT – team work
You and your team will use the engineering process to brainstorm, plan, and create your sanctuary. We will build it in the Innovation Lab.
·         Your project must be three-dimensional.
·         Your habitat should demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of your tiger’s habitat.
You will include your blueprints (brainstorming and design) as part of your project.

Zoo Habitat Project

Objectives:
Students will be able to:
1) Identify and describe food, water, and shelter as three important parts of habitat;
2) Describe the importance of good habitat for the tiger;
3) Demonstrate his/her understanding of the engineering process, resulting in a safe and appropriate habitat for the tiger and zoo visitors

Part I: RESEARCH  - team work

Tiger Habitat Research

As you watch the video, make observations that will help you when you and your team design your habitat. You can use my notes and this video as resources for your project.

Below are my notes from  the tiger curator, Mr. Farshid Mehrdadfar:

The lifespan of a tiger in captivity is 21 to 25 years. In the wild, it's 12 to 13 years.
Tigers must have fresh water daily.
Tigers are carnivores, which means they eat meat; They eat about 7 pounds of meat per day.
The average can jump 19 feet.
The height of the fence at the Memphis Zoo is 19 feet with a turnback (curved part) that is an additional 3ft.
The top of the fence is hot wired.  (electric)
The pool between the tiger and the visitors is 25 feet deep.
The wall up against the pool is sloped to prevent the tigers from climbing out.
Enclosed exhibits have fencing all around (top and sides) for total coverage.
Tigers in the wild need open space and protection from hunters.
