Grammar Notes: Types of Sentences

Declarative       Interrogatives                Exclamatory            Imperative

 

_______________________ (Statement) – a sentence that tells something.

§  Begins with a capital letter.

§  Ends with a period.

§  Example:  I like to learn.

§  Example: Today is a beautiful day.

                       

________________________ (Question) – a sentence that asks something.

§  Begins with a capital letter. 

§  Ends with a ?.

§  Example: Do you like to learn?

 

_________________________ (exclamation) - expresses feelings and usually ends with an exclamation point.

§  Begins with a capital letter.

§  Ends with a !.

§  Example: I love to learn!

§  Example:  Wow! I am so happy to have you in my class!

§  Example: What a fun year we will have!


_______________________ (command) - tells you to do something (action) and typically ends with a period.

§  Begins with a capital letter.

§  Ends with a period.

§  Example: Go to bed.

§  Example:  Show me HALL.
