3G -- PLEASE READ

Go get your favorite book and put it in your lap. We'll come back to it in just a bit.

I was grading your English papers, and many of you are struggling with verb phrases. The phrases in red are verb phrases. Some of you didn't write in complete sentences. Every sentence must have a complete subject and complete predicate.

Remember the rules:

is, are, am, was, were, will, have, had , has are LINKING VERBS.

When you use is, are, am, was, were, will, have, had , has followed by action verb (ending in -ing or -ed), they are HELPING VERBS and are part of a verb phrase. The action is the MAIN VERB.

I have a dog.  HAVE is a LINKING VERB  (There is no action in this sentence.)

She is going to the store.   IS GOING is a VERB PHRASE. IS = HELPING, GOING = MAIN
- Remember verbs ending in -ing CANNOT stand alone.

I am a teacher. AM is a LINKING VERB  (There is no action in this sentence.)

I am talking to you. AM is a HELPING VERB and TALKING is a MAIN VERB. They are part of a VERB PHRASE.

Now back to your book. Search your book for action verbs, linking verbs, and verb phrases. Ask mom, dad, a grandparent, or older sibling to help you! If you get stuck, bring it in tomorrow, and I'll help you.

Homework

January RQ is due tomorrow.

Cinquain Poem

We're working on our Cinquain poems.

Students had to choose a cold-related theme from any of our previous lessons (tundra/ecosystem, winter/weather, or snow, ice, sleet/precipitation).

The poem has 5 lines and each line has a specific number of syllables and a specific part of speech. For example, line three must have six syllables and can only have verbs ending in -ing (gerunds). It's fun, but very challenging!

For the art portion, they are creating symmetrical fingerprint snowflakes. Just like each snowflake, God must us unique!!

How much snow did you get at your house?

Just for fun...and 5 bonus points on our division test...measure how much snow accumulated at your house! Using a ruler, yard stick, measuring tape, or any non-standard unit of measure (a spoon, paper clip, straw), measure the depth of the snow in your yard. Using the data we collect, we’ll compare and contrast to see who got the most snow! (This activity is optional.)

You can write it down or you can email me a picture.  BTW, I’ve got about 2” on my deck, and it’s still coming down.

Have fun and stay warm!

Also, don’t forget that IXL and handwriting is due, and we’re having our division test on the day we come back.
